The Warfield and Culps Hill towers will close along with adjacent parking areas will close at sunset on Sunday, Oct. 29, and tentatively remain closed until sunrise on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Park officials said the closure is needed so that flagpoles on top of the towers can be removed “due to safety concerns.”
“Restoration of the removed flagpoles will be performed in coordination with a future preservation project. All three towers, including the Oak Ridge observation tower, were built between 1895 and 1896 when Gettysburg National Military Park was administered by the United States War Department between 1895 and 1933,” the park said.
The Culp’s Hill Observation Tower is a 60-foot tall metal tower with a roofed platform at the top. The platform can be accessed by climbing 7 flights of stairs.The Oak Ridge Observation Tower is a 23-foot tall metal tower with a flat platform at the top.
