The operation ran for more than a year in the 200 block of Makin Road in Oakland, authorities said.
Federal authorities have sentenced an Oakland man involved in what authorities have called an “open-air drug market” to more than 8 years in prison after he admitted to selling a half-ounce of crack cocaine daily during the operation.
Darryl Washington admitted to conspiring to distribute and possessing 28 grams or more of cocaine base with the intent to distribute it, authorities said. He also pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a gun.The charges stemmed from Washington’s ties to a large drug and gun-trafficking operation that ran from mid-2017 to January 2019 in theAccording to court documents, authorities said Washington worked the evening shift from at least Oct. 11, 2017, through Jan.
In his plea agreement, Washington admitted selling a half-ounce of crack cocaine per shift. He also acknowledged selling at least 1,680 grams of crack cocaine.“Washington played a critical role in an open-air drug market in East Oakland,” U.S. Attorney Stephanie Hinds wrote in a pre-sentence report. “Washington sold approximately half an ounce of crack almost each evening, seven days a week, for at least 15 months.
Washington’s defense cited his difficult life and the instability and severe trauma he endured as a child and young adult, factors Hinds also mentioned in the pre-sentence report. Washington’s parents were drug addicts, and he moved from house to house and school to school with two older sisters and three younger brothers, authorities said. At age 20, he was shot in both legs while leaving a store in Oakland. He also injured his hip in a car crash, authorities said.
