New York City Mayor Eric Adams doesn't rule out the need to reinstate COVID vaccine mandates in the future.

On the same day that COVID vaccine mandates were lifted in New York City, Mayor Eric Adams didn’t rule out the need to reinstate them in the future, because the virus is “not going away.”

His statement comes as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services hosts a call Monday to discuss the transition road map for when the federal Public Health Emergency for COVID-19 expires on May 11. Adams said that when COVID was at its worst, after seeing “trailers of bodies,” many more people would have died if the mandates weren’t in place. But things have improved, at least for now.

In other COVID news, Novavax Inc. NVAX said it would deliver up to 1.5 million doses of its updated COVID-19 booster shot to the U.S. government. The company said the boosters will be provided for the “upcoming 2023-2024 vaccination campaign.”
