NVIDIA officially launched a new GeForce RTX 4070 with slower GDDR6 memory, albeit without the pomp and grandeur. The GPU company is saying that the launch of

this configuration is to 'improve supply and availability to meet strong demand'.

It's not an exaggeration that NVIDIA is launching this variant of the RTX 4070 as quiet as possible; the official announcement of the card was practically buried within its regular announcement of Game Ready Drivers. By that, the announcement was practically at the end of the highlights, after the announcement of its addition of 20 new games that enable DLSS 3.

Aside from the downgrade from GDDR6X to GDDR6, this new version of the RTX 4070 is more or less identical to the former. In terms of performance, NVIDIA says that the new card performs similarly in games and applications. That said, the card is also supported by the latest Game Ready Drivers, Version 560.94 WQHL.

The original RTX 4070 with GDDR6X memory was launched back in April last year. The card was the direct replacement of the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Ti, and technically prioritised performance-per-watt efficiency. More obviously, the card was a cheaper alternative to the RTX 4070 Ti, although it was still not as cheap as an RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 3070. Cards that are still sought after by the wider gaming community.
