Nuggets beat writer msinger answers questions from readers, including whether or not Nikola Jokic has been too passive to start the season.
: Have you noticed a change in Nikola Jokic’s demeanor this season? He seems less engaged and more irritated generally than he typically has.: Do you think Jokic’s early season passiveness is him trying to get the team to play together, or do you think it is more along the lines of him over-correcting in shot distribution with other capable 20-plus points-per-game scorers. Or, is it something else?: Two questions that we’re going to blend into one answer.
He used the word impatient, meaning, Jokic doesn’t have time for the same mental mistakes, and he doesn’t have use for anyone who’s not as engaged as he is. They lost two great chances in the postseason due to injuries, after all. During our interactions so far this season, I’ve found him to be in a great mood.
On the court, I find him testing out his new pieces. How to best use Bruce in dribble handoffs or pick-and-rolls. Where he can trust Braun and Caldwell-Pope to be with his blind passes . And letting both MPJ and Jamal Murray gain confidence through their reps. The Portland game, as ugly as it was, was an anomaly. He knows that he needs to be aggressive, shooting from all three levels, to open up cutting/passing lanes.
NBA organizations have advanced scouts who are paid to dissect what teams are doing, and having talked with one, here’s my cursory understanding. I believe the Nuggets intend to switch 1-through-4. So everything up to Jokic is on split-second communication and knowing personnel. Obviously, that doesn’t always happen, but given Aaron Gordon’s versatility and Jamal Murray’s size, that makes sense. There may also be exceptions for MPJ. I don’t know that, but I assume that. I love the question.
