Australia's nuclear submarines won't be jointly crewed or under the joint command of United States officers, a senior US congressman has confirmed.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to outline details of Australia’s acquisition of nuclear submarines early next week, with leaked reports indicatingwhile also working on a future design with the US and UK.
As chair of the seapower subcommittee and co-chair of the AUKUS Working Group, Congressman Courtney has been intimately involved in the work done since the trilateral security pact was announced 18 months ago. “One of the principles of this AUKUS agreement is to recognise that we’re all sovereign countries,” Congressman Courtney said.
Mr Courtney said he had introduced an amendment to last year’s defence bill to authorise joint training at the nuclear training school in South Carolina, where US officers learn to operate nuclear submarines.
