The Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians has argued a youth curfew in Alice Springs will not effectively combat the town’s high rates of juvenile crime in the long run, despite the immediate reprieve it has offered.

The Assistant Indigenous Australians Minister has opposed the idea of prolonging Alice Springs' youth curfew, in stark contrast to the town's mayor who says it should remain in place for a"long time".

Any youngster who breached the condition and was spotted outside would be escorted by police to their home or a designated “safe place”. The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency claimed the emergency youth declaration had been made without community consultation and jeopardised young people, along with inflaming the risk of more community violence.
