Landlords would need to have reasonable grounds to evict a tenant, the major parties say, under new rules that would also offer longer lease terms and regulate data collection.
Both major parties have committed to ending them, at least for periodic leases, ahead of the NSW election. No grounds evictions are set to be banned in NSW for renters on rolling leases, as the Liberal and Nationals parties, Labor and Greens all commit to ending the practice.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said the reforms would provide greater protections and certainty for renters across the state while protecting the rights of landlords.“These new measures will provide even greater certainty and flexibility for nearly a million renters across NSW,” Perrottet said. “The government has insisted on not touching it. I’m surprised that in the 12 years [of being in government] they haven’t listened to the community and the pain and anguish it’s causing.”
