OPINION: By the usual laws of politics, Labor should be set for a landslide victory against a 12-year-old government that is giving every indication of having been in office too long. Yet there is little sign that ‘the swing is on’.
At the end of 2022, it seemed all that awaited the Perrottet government were the last rites and a decent burial. Almost nothing has gone right for Dominic Perrottet since he succeeded Gladys Berejiklian as premier on October 5, 2021.
In July, an Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation found former Liberal MP for Drummoyne John Sidoti had acted corruptly. Liberal MP for Kiama Gareth Ward was charged with serious sexual offences. On August 5, Perrottet was forced to sack Liberal minister Eleni Petinos over allegations she had bullied her staff.
Instead, the new premier proved a political pragmatist, moving to the left on social and environmental issues, particularly in response to the success ofThe opposition campaign so far has been lacklustre. There is no vision, no bold, attractive program to revitalise NSW. There is one area of policy differentiation, not to the opposition’s advantage. There is mounting evidence that problem gambling involving poker machines in registered clubs is a major social problem – an abuse, anti-gambling campaigners claim, that is cynically exploited by the clubs which have long since moved away from their original community focus.
