NSTLeader: Just as you are about to extol the virtues of a humane India, you realise that accelerated citizenship is only for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jains and Parsees from neighbouring countries.
On the face of it, CAA leads one to believe that it offers accelerated refuge to the repressed. Just as you are about to extol the virtues of a humane India, you realise that accelerated citizenship is only for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jains and Parsees from neighbouring countries.
No mention of China, Myanmar or Sri Lanka, where Muslims are persecuted. Oh, what a sleight of hand this is, India! Muslims, it seems, at least according to post-CAA India, cannot be repressed. Even if the Muslims are victims of genocide, extermination and persecution in the unnamed countries, they will not be offered refuge in India.
There is no legislative basis for singling out persecution of religious minorities as the basis for granting Indian citizenship, just as there is no logic in restricting ‘fast track’ naturalisation to persons from three countries alone. Surely, persecution of any kind ought to be the sole criterion for granting citizenship to immigrants.
