Melbourne Storm star Eliesa Katoa is about to embark on an NRL finals campaign just over two months after he feared never regaining his sight as he lay on a hospital bed.

The 23-year-old was taken off early in the Storm’s round 15 match against the Cronulla Sharks when he received an accidental poke in the eye during a tackle.

While his sight was back within a week of the surgery Katoa was bedridden facing downward during the recovery. Seven weeks later Katoa returned to the field in the Storm’s 46-16 victory over the Parramatta Eels and three weeks later he played a full 80 minutes against the Dragons last weekend. Katoa made his NRL debut for the New Zealand Warriors in 2020 before moving to AAMI Park this year and he has now racked up 63 matches and is on the verge of his first finals campaign and a potential call up to the Tongan national team.
