Former rugby league players have been left steaming after several Kangaroos players refused to take part in the national anthem on Saturday. The Kangaroos ripped Samoa apart to start their Pacific Championships campaign, but it was the scenes ahead of the game that drew ire of some observers.
Kangaroos beat Samoa in Pacific Cup. Kotoni Staggs, Payne Haas, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Selwyn Cobbo were some of the stars who were called out for not singing during the anthem. It was in stark contrast to the Samoan team, who were applauded for their stirring war dance and visible emotion - Connelly Lemuelu was in tears - while singing their country’s anthem. Veteran caller and former player Peter Peters was outraged by the non-singing Australians.
