Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner, who entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week, committed Thursday morning to transfer to Alabama.
Buchner made the announcement in a Twitter post after making a visit Wednesday to Tuscaloosa.
Alabama now has five scholarship quarterbacks on its roster, including Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson , who were competing for the starting job this spring. The NCAA transfer portal window for undergraduates closes at the end of the day Sunday and will not re-open until December, meaning Milroe and Simpson must decide by this weekend whether they want to transfer or remain at Alabama this season.
“I think the people that have been in the program obviously have an advantage, to some degree, because they know the system, they’ve had a lot of reps in the system,” he said. “But I also think everybody needs to ask themselves, with every position you play, are you playing winning football at that position and can you play winning football at that position?
Buchner received several high-level college scholarship offers early in high school when he lived in San Diego. UCLA offered him before his freshman season in 2017, then several schools made offers before his sophomore season, including Alabama, USC and Georgia in May 2018. He also received offers from Ivy League schools Yale, Penn and Columbia.
Buchner arrived at Notre Dame in 2021 as a four-star prospect and No. 71-rated player in the 2021 high school recruiting class by 247 Sports’ industry composite. He appeared in 10 games as a freshman, running for 336 yards and three touchdowns while completing 21-of-35 passes for three touchdowns and three interceptions.
