Officials at the scene of the Notre Dame fire Monday night said the blaze had dropped in intensity and that the cathedral structure, including the two towers on the main facade, had been saved.
More than 400 firefighters were fighting the blaze, which broke out about 6:45 p.m. local time, destroying large parts of the 850-year-old Gothic monument that is the spiritual symbol of the French capital.Firefighters said the roof had been mostly destroyed, and at one they point feared the entire building could collapse.
There were fears for the three “rose” stained glass windows and treasures inside the cathedral, though many had been removed as the building was undergoing renovations. Firefighters rushed to remove works of art from inside the building.
