One thing was clear as Ukrainians turned out to vote on Sunday: The next president will maintain an anti-Russian stance that continues to look westward, toward some kind of European integration for the post-Soviet nation of 43 million.
. Poroshenko has been a wartime president who is trying to convince voters that sticking with him means continuing to fight against Russian aggression.
”There’s no one I really like, but I’m going to vote for someone,” said Mikhail Fesenko, 29, who works in marketing in a Kiev advertising company. “We need someone to start building our country. ... But I don’t know which of these guys can really do that.” “I don’t want to go for Poroshenko because I don’t really like his politics and he’s had enough time to change things,” Fesenko said. “But maybe I will because at least we know who he is. I don’t trust Yulia [Tymoshenko] and we know nothing about this clown, Zelensky.”
Hundreds of international observers were scattered across the country to watch for irregularities. Cindy McCain, the widow of Sen. John McCain, who died in December, was heading up the delegation for the International Republican Institute, a quasi-governmental agency that supports democracy-building programs around the world.
