Executive producer Robyn Asimov gets candid.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Robyn Asimov, the daughter of Foundation author Isaac Asimov, candidly discusses the one thing the show does better than the books. Debuting in 2021 with David S. Goyer serving as showrunner, the Apple TV+ sci-fi drama follows a group of exiles on their crucial journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.
In an interview with Collider to discuss Foundation season 2, Asimov addressed a common criticism of her father's books. Asimov was speaking as an executive producer on the Apple TV+ drama and detailed the difference between the show and books in terms of character development versus a focus on world-building. Read her quote below:
“I love the character development. That was not my father’s strong suit, and not necessarily his interest per se. It was all about the storytelling, and he did that so well that it was okay that the characters were a bit flat. What David [S. Goyer] did was especially... I love the Cleon story. He gave life to these characters, and it brought the story to another level. The story was great anyway, but I think if, if my father had lived to see this, I think he would have been very, very impressed.
Asimov's Comments Explain Why TV Adaptations Like Foundation Need To Be Different Television's mode of storytelling can be accurately summed up as 'characters talking in rooms.' Unlike feature movies, which can rely on spectacle, thrilling action, or an actor's charisma to paper over a weak story and weaker connection to the characters, TV doesn't have that luxury.
This is part of why the character deaths in Foundation are front of mind for those who watch it. Even though the elaborate backdrop and intricate world are vital, it means less without compelling figures to drive the narrative. As a member of the show's team, Robyn Asimov perfectly elaborates on that importance in a way that bodes well for the adaptation's future.
