Researchers who develop clinical algorithms are now having to grapple with ways to build these social determinants into their models instead of relying on race as a substitute. “I think we still need so much more conversation and transparent dialogue about how that history was used to advance white supremacy, and how it impacted the scientific integrity of medicine.”
The time has certainly come to reevaluate the way we use race in clinical diagnostics, why we use it, and whether it is still appropriate said Dr. Crystal Gadegbeku, a nephrologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who was part of the task force that developed the new race-free measure of kidney function.
