Daniel Andrews has announced Victoria will not host the Commonwealth Games in 2026, saying it will cost three times as much as originally budgeted.

“The Games will not proceed in Victoria in 2026,” Mr Andrews said on Tuesday.“What’s become clear is that the cost of hosting the Games is not the $2.6 billion ... it is at least $6 billion, and could be as high as $7 billion.

The Commonwealth Games Federation said it remained committed to find an alternative host to the games after blaming the cost blowouts on the state government’s desire to host the games in regional centres. “This decision is a betrayal of regional Victoria and confirms that Victoria is broke and Labor simply cannot manage major projects without huge cost blowouts,” he said.

Federal Liberal MP Keith Wolahan said losing the Commonwealth Games was “embarrassing” for Victoria and that the cancellation was a symptom of the state having the “highest debt and the highest tax” in the country.Ai Group Victorian head Tim Piper said while pulling the pin was the “right decision” from a cost perspective, it would damage the state’s reputation.

“It’s a small window, but it’s an important opportunity for us to stop this now and not finish up incurring huge costs beyond this,” Mr Andrews said on Tuesday.
