Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's deployment to Parliament was a testament to how the ANC views the institution and its importance to South Africans.was under pressure to reduce the size of Cabinet when he appointed a new executive in 2019, following elections, Mapisa-Nqakula was an obvious name to drop because of her lacklustre performance as defence minister.
In short, they view it as a suitable place to dump under-performing public officials who have skeletons in their cupboards. Now the skeletons have come tumbling out as the Speaker faces arrest for corruption. But even at this late stage, when it was becoming clear that the Hawks were tightening their grip around her, the ANC still saw fit to defend her.
Serving in state institutions for years without accountability does go to people’s heads – as evidenced by the Speaker seemingly believing that she was immune from arrest.
