TOKYO: A low pressure system covered northern Japan on Tuesday (Dec 31), with weather authorities warning that a blizzard and strong winds were expected to hit the region.
Japan's Meteorological Agency forecast a severe winter storm would pound the northern island of Hokkaido and Sea of Japan coastal areas from late Tuesday.
The agency warned of violent winds, blizzard conditions and traffic disruptions in wide areas of northern and central Japan. The storm brought gusts of wind up to 87km per hour in the cities of Kushiro and Muroran on Hokkaido on Tuesday, the agency said.The maximum gusts expected on Dec 31 were 126 kph in Hokkaido and 108 kph in the Tohoku region. Hokkaido was also forecast to experience winds between 108 and 144kph on New Year's Day. Such strong winds is also expected to hamper public transportation.
Weather officials also said that winds will remain strong through New Year's Day, especially in Hokkaido, with violent snow storms and snowdrifts likely. Because of unstable atmospheric conditions, residents in northern Japan were advised to be cautious about lightning, tornadoes and hail.- dpa/Asian News Network
