Beggars crowding the Kapitan Keling Mosque in George Town, Penang, are usually a common sight every year during Ramadan.
But it is a totally different scenario this year with the movement control order as not a beggar can be seen at the mosques statewide anymore.State exco member Phee Boon Poh called them ‘seasonal beggars’.
Phee said action would be taken against them if they are found loitering around mosques without valid reasons.“They will turn up during big festivals such as Thaipusam, Hari Raya and Chinese New Year, except this Ramadan,” he said. Penang Muslim League president Datuk Najmudeen Kader said most of the beggars who were usually present this time were not seen anywhere near the mosque.
