Women’s group Gabriela criticized Senator Robinhood Padilla following his “macho” and “misogynistic” rant about womanizing in a forum on Charter change held Wednesday, Feb. 22, reiterating that this act should not be tolerated.
During the forum, Padilla assured the public that he will “make noise” when the discussion on the controversial amendment of the constitution has turned to politics. He then stated that he “does not want to stick with [being a Senator],” jesting that everyday he wants to resign because he “cannot have women” there.
After this remark, Gabriela reminded the government official that his job is to address gaps in current laws and not to womanize. “Senator Padilla acts tough and macho, when [in reality] he is a coward [in terms of] defending the interests of women in the Philippines,” said Gabriela Secretary General Clarice Palce on Thursday, Feb. 23.In a separate statement, Gabriela Women’s Partylist also urged Padilla to address this matter and issue a public apology.
“His statement [violates] the Code of Conduct for Public Officials which states that [they] must uphold the public interest over and above personal interest. Moreover, it reeks of misogyny and toxic masculinity which should not be tolerated in this society,” it stressed. Rather than airing sexist remarks, Palce told Filipino Senators — ahead of the National Women’s Month celebration in March — to “condemn anti-women and anti-people policies” in the Philippines.
