With the water levels in Sungai Muda and the Air Itam dam dropping due to the drought, Penang’s water utility company tells residents to stop wasting water.
Penang Water Supply Corporation CEO Jaseni Maidinsa wants Penangites to stop washing cars and watering gardens unnecessarily to conserve water.
He said usually the dams would pump out 432 million litres per day or five cubic metres per second . Today, the levels were jacked up to 864 MLD, or 10 cumecs, to meet the river’s shortfall, he said.Jaseni revealed that the Air Itam dam, whose waters were previously reported as also going down, had another 59 days before it dried up completely.
He said between January and July in 2016, there was barely any rain, which resulted in water levels at dams dropping. Jaseni said water treatment plants would double their production of treated water to counter the shortage of water. “The people of Penang must play their role to minimise the risk of water rationing by reducing their daily water consumption.
