Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie has come to Peter Dutton’s defence following a disastrous by-election defeat but has unleashed on the Liberal brand, arguing the party is sitting too far to the right of Labor.
But Senator Lambie said the blame should not be squarely levelled at Mr Dutton, arguing the result of the Aston by-election should not trigger the toppling of the Liberal leader.
“It is not Peter Dutton that should be taking the full responsibility of this, it is his whole team and they need to look forward to the future.” “Sitting that far right mate I just don’t think it’s helpful they need to come back to the centre a bit," she said. “After a defeat of a long-term government everyone knows that’s the most difficult time that you can have in opposition,” Mr Tehan told Stefanovic on Monday.
“The problem is the party is now in a position where what had hitherto been the crown jewels, the safer seats, most of them are now in the hands of teals and now they’re losing mortgage-belt seats. “I can tell you it makes me more determined to rebuild this party and be in a winning position by 2025.”
