No more spammy pictures or videos from strangers! Meta TechNave Instagram

Instagram is a great social media platform. It helps you keep up with your loved ones, friends and even your favourite artists. But that is not all, you can share your favourite memes, videos and pictures too. However, you might have received unsolicited images or videos from strangers on the platform. To combat this, Instagram introduced a new feature.

Recently, Instagram rolled out a new feature to make its direct messaging service safe by preventing users from receiving unwanted videos and photos in DMs. On top of that, it also prevents strangers from sending you audio messages. However, you can still receive text-based DM invites. The good news is these text-based DM invites are only limited to one message. Previously, there are no limits to the amount of text-based DM invites you could get. Now, messages can only be exchanged when you accept the chat request. Cindy Southworth, head of Women’s Safety at Meta said in an emailed statement:

“We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox. That’s why we’re testing new features that mean people can’t receive images, videos, or multiple messages from someone they don’t follow until they’ve accepted the request to chat. We’re grateful for the feedback we hear from our community – and we’ll keep listening to find ways to help everyone feel safer on Instagram.”

While the feature has its limits, it does add to Instagram’s functionality in protecting minors online. Previously, Meta introduced"hidden words," which allow comments and messages to be filtered according to certain"forbidden" words. Hence, this helps restrict access to content to certain users or even block them altogether. Ultimately, it aims to reduce unwanted interactions.
