The big adult-only studio comedy feels like a thing of the past. These days most comedies, especially ones with an edgy side, are transformed into 10-12 episode television series or are snatched up by streamers.
The catch is he can never know his overbearing parents are behind it. They want Maddie to shepherd him into manhood while instilling in him the confidence that he did it himself. With romantic comedies or even coming-of-age stories, the worst ones can’t distract you from the formulaic nature. But the best ones tug at our heartstrings even though we know how it’ll end.
