Georgia Tech is one of the ACC’s top volleyball programs, but the Mustangs are no stranger to major upsets.
The Mustangs swept the 13th-ranked Yellow Jackets 25-22, 25-20, and 25-21 Friday evening in Atlanta, winning three straight tightly contested sets thanks to standout performances from graduate outside hitter Maya Tabron and graduate opposite Naya Shime.Tabron earned a contest-leading 19 points followed up by Shime’s 14.5, including 14 kills each. The pair set the tone early, accounting for five of SMU’s first six kills as the teams traded blows, aided by graduate setter Celia Cullen.
While the accomplishment puts an exclamation mark on the Mustangs’ entrance into the ACC, it’s not even their first major upset — or sweep — of the season.
