Victor Wembanyama struggled from the field in his first NBA Summer League game with the Spurs. Still, he flashed skills that helped build the hype.
. His 73 combined points in two exhibition games left scouts' mouths watering over the chance to draft him.in the draft lottery — and how good he actually could be in the NBA.is still to be determined, but it may be a good thing NBA Summer League performances often don't mean much.
"I think all in all he did a good job," Spurs Summer League head coach Matt Nielsen said."Obviously, there's a lot of attention on him, you can talk about the outside stuff. But, the physicality, that was something that tonight obviously wound him up as it would. I thought he navigated it for the most part pretty well."A certain mystique settled around Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 French center, since those performances in Henderson.
However, there were more downs than ups in Wembanyama’s debut. The game at times felt too fast for him. Much of Wembanyama’s skills that left scouts enamored were displayed early in the game, especially his ball handling. He had a quick crossover dribble from the 3-point line then a pass that led to free throws. The 7-foot-4 center comfortably brought the ball up the court, too, after grabbing a rebound.
