The film based on how the company came up with Michael Jordan's Air Jordan line is a winning look back at the '80s.
The year is 1984, and Sonny Vaccaro is a middle-age guy with more than a few pounds around the middle who seems to have no family and does his grocery shopping at a local convenience store. But this is the guy who's in charge of the basketball department at Nike, a company known at the time more for running shoes that was being beaten soundly by Adidas and Converse in its effort to expand into basketball.
As written and directed by Affleck,"Air" is as breezy as its title, never taking itself too seriously but not becoming just a series of one-liners either. Underneath the window dressing of ’80s nostalgia and pop-music needle drops is a look back at an era when athletes were just beginning to flex their financial muscles and learn the marketing ropes.
One choice that some viewers might find odd is that Jordan is rarely seen, doesn't speak much and when he is glimpsed, it's from the back. It's as if Michael had no agency in the back-and-forth between Vaccaro and his mother. Affleck has explained why he went in this direction in interviews,,"We made as much a sort of fable as anything else, because it’s really about a character who never appears in the movie, in Michael Jordan.
