Nigerian telecom subscribers are protesting against a planned 40% increase in telecom service tariffs, set to take effect in 2025.

Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have strongly opposed a proposed 40 percent increase in telecom service tariffs scheduled to take effect in 2025. The National Exco of the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) announced this stance in a joint communique issued by its National president, Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, and the Secretary, Barr. Bayo Omotubora, on Tuesday. This decision follows widespread reports of a planned tariff hike in 2025.

NATCOMS argues that any increase in telecom service tariffs would be highly insensitive given the current economic difficulties faced by Nigerians. The association urged telecom operators to explore alternative solutions instead of a tariff hike to manage rising operating costs. NATCOMS held an emergency meeting on December 31, 2024, to address the planned tariff increase. The meeting resulted in a unanimous resolution rejecting the proposed hike. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently announced its approval for telecommunication service operators to increase their tariffs by approximately 40 percent. NATCOMS views this decision by the NCC as insensitive and not in the best interests of telecom consumers. The association cites the continuous rise in prices of goods and services, making life challenging for citizens who are also telecom service users. The new tariff increase would add to their existing burden. Under the proposed new tariff structure, a voice call would rise from N11.00 to N15.40 per minute. Short message services would jump from N4.00 to N5.60, and a 1GB data bundle would increase from N1,000 to N1,400
