Edafe Okporo fled his homeland in 2016 after he was subjected to homophobic violence. Now, after founding New York City's first and only shelter for asylum-seekers and refugees, he's helping others who are looking to build lives in the US.

Under those restrictions, Okporo said, asylum-seekers would face more barriers coming to the U.S. than ever before."The pandemic has given the administration an opportunity to really close the door for a lot of the refugees and asylum-seekers who usually expect America to be that place of safety when they think about fleeing their countries," he said.
