Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen argued in stark terms that illegal immigration has caused a humanitarian crisis that necessitates construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border
At the hearing today, Nielsen will stand at the center of a heated border security debate. President Donald Trump last month declared a national emergency over illegal immigration after Congress refused to provide his administration billions for a border wall. The House passed a resolution to terminate the emergency and the Senate will likely vote it down later this month, although Trump has vowed to veto the termination.
Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson slammed Nielsen in opening remarks for a failure to provide the committee with documents related to family separation and the treatment of children in custody. Thompson also asserted that Trump had used “an emergency that does not exist” to obtain funds for a border wall outside the will of Congress.
