Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa grades the Chargers after their 30-27 home loss Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs
Allen, on a pitch count, caught the first pass Herbert threw. Josh Palmer caught the second one, 50 yards for a touchdown . But Williams limped off the field in the first quarter after making a brilliant catch and didn’t return. TE Gerald Everett was out with a groin injury. Rookie TE Stone “Double t” Smartt, a big surprise, made his debut. DeAndre Carter continues to make plays when needed. Allen fumbled one away but came back with a tremendous 46-yard catch with 3 minutes left.
Kenneth Murray again hurt himself. Troy “Voracious” Reeder, subbing for Murray, forced a fumble/turnover that halted a Chiefs drive. The DBs had trouble with Travis Kelce, of course, but it was the other TE, Jody Fortson, who also gave them fits — maybe because they didn’t know Jody existed. Derwin James did more than hold his own vs. Kelce for a while and then got beat by Travis for the winner. James had the lone sack.
