PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) has urged the government to set up a commission to combat the rising instances of drug abuse in the country.

Its senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said although drug abuse in the country had not reached alarming levels compared to other countries such as Colombia, it could take a turn for the worse if no drastic action was taken.

"A commission needs to be set up to study existing drug-related policies and to bring about necessary change and reforms to make it more relevant," he said in a statement on Sunday . He said such a commission should consist of high-ranking leaders of relevant government agencies, non-governmental organisations and experts.

"The commission has to take into consideration the proposal to decriminalise drug addicts because they should not be seen as criminals but as patients who need to be treated and rehabilitated," he said.
