Always looking for a chance to make a bigger splash, the NFL is making one significant change to the combine.

CLOSECONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMOREINDIANAPOLIS — Changes are coming to the NFL scouting combine, but the event is staying at home for at least the next two years.

“This will enable us to accomplish the goal of reaching more fans while still fully maintaining the football integrity of the event,” a league spokesman said. “We will adjust the schedule to ensure a positive experience for the players and clubs.” Traditionally, the formal interviews each team conducts at the combine have taken place at night, after the workouts; with on-field drills now taking place in prime time, that schedule must be shifted, because the general managers and coaches who conduct the interviews have to be watching the workouts on the field.

And the Colts organization proved to be powerful allies in the fight to keep the combine in Indianapolis. Keeping the event in Indianapolis beyond 2021 will require continued efforts by the city to prove to the NFL that it can handle the growing scale of the combine. According to Gahl, the city hosted 5,000 credentialed individuals, along with 10,000 fans, during combine week this year, and as those numbers swell, the NFL wants to ensure the host city can handle the volume.
