In an interview, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell highlights recent rule changes designed to improve player safety. He addresses concerns about hip drop tackles and emphasizes the league's commitment to reducing concussions.

"And looking at our, our rules every year, I, I think we're over 60 rule changes in the last 15 years that have been designed specifically for safety and have made the game safer, taken those techniques out," Goodell said."You know, people are talking about the hip drop, which is extended into college football and impacted college football a lot last year.

"But I believe we're going to have helmets for each position. We already have it for for quarterbacks and, and lineman. And, you know, there are different types of hits that every position takes and you want to have helmets that are built to be able to handle those types of impacts," he said. "But you know, Mark, that was the first reaction from a lot of guys. And you know, our point to them was this is safer for you based on the quality of helmets we had then. And it's been about a 20% reduction in concussions," Goodell responded.

Another rule change this season has to do with kickoffs in an attempt to encourage more returns as well as keeping players safe during one of the game's most violent plays. Though there has been success on both fronts two weeks into the season, there may be more changes coming - including where the ball is spotted after touchbacks.

"I think if you move that to 35, you'd get a tremendous increase in the number of returns," said Goodell, "I think that's a big change that will probably be considered at some point in the future."
