The animated sequel 'Nezha 2' has shattered box office records in China, emerging as the highest-grossing film during the Lunar New Year holiday. This success signifies a strong rebound for the Chinese film industry after a challenging 2024.
The animated film ' Nezha 2 ' has become China's highest-grossing film during the Lunar New Year holiday, raking in over 5.8 billion yuan (RM3.5 billion). The film, which tells the story of a mythical boy with magical powers and impressive martial arts skills, dethroned the previous record holder, a 2021 epic about the Korean War, according to the online ticketing platform Maoyan. ' Nezha 2 ' is a sequel to the 2019 hit 'Nezha,' which ranks fifth on the list of China's highest-grossing films.

Despite this year's strong start, analysts remain cautious about the outlook for the industry. Box office statistics are heavily influenced by the release of blockbuster films, Goldman Sachs noted in a report yesterday. Distributors often hesitate to release major films during periods of economic uncertainty or outside of holiday seasons. Notably, among China's all-time top 10 films, there is only one Hollywood film present
