State judicial conduct code previously barred any broadcasting, recording or photography during proceedings butso that, starting May 1, judges can give the OK to reporters who want to bring cameras to public hearings.
“This is the culmination of years of work and pilot projects with discussion and evaluation,” Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush said Wednesday in a prepared statement. “Trial court judges are in the best position to determine how to balance the importance of transparency while protecting the rights of people involved in a court matter.”The change comes after the state supreme court published a proposed rule change last year that was open to public comment.
Certain restrictions will apply. Minors and jurors can't be photographed or recorded on video, for example.
