A teen woman has been arrested and reportedly confessed to putting her child in the dumpster, according to police in New Mexico.

HOBBS, New Mexico — A newborn baby boy is recovering after he was discovered in a dumpster and the 18-year-old mother now is facing criminal charges.

The baby was found by two men and a woman searching through dumpsters in search of possible valuable items, Hobbs Police Chief August Fons said in a news conference. While searching through the dumpster, they heard what they thought was a baby crying. Avila has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and alternatively, felony abuse of a child, Fons said. She is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
