A Newark police officer was arrested Friday, charged with a sex crime stemming from an incident with an Uber driver, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. The officer, Karon Bell, 23, of Newark, is charged with criminal sexual contact, said the prosecutor’s office in a press release on Saturday.

On Dec. 11, a 36-year-old woman told Kearny police she was the victim of a sex crime while she was on shift as an Uber driver. She had never met the assailant before, she told investigators, but said he identified himself to her as a police officer. An investigation by the prosecutor’s office’s Special Victims Unit identified Bell as the assailant. He was off duty at time of the incident, investigators said.

Bell was arrested by Newark police’s Office of Professional Standards and transferred into the custody of the prosecutor’s office. He was released on a summons and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 25.
