New 'zombie fungus' species discovered in Sabah, five others undocumented

A PhD student from Universiti Malaysia Sabah discovered a new species of entomopathogenic fungus, known as 'zombie fungus', from spider samples in Sabah forests, confirmed through morphology and DNA analysis. The study also recorded five previously undocumented fungal species in Malaysia, highlighting Sabah's biodiversity and the potential for new tropical discoveries.

Difahamkan, penemuan itu merupakan hasil kajian Muhammad Shahbaz dari Institut Biologi Tropika dan Pemuliharaan yang meneroka kepelbagaian kulat di Borneo. Penyelidikan seorang pelajar PhD Universiti Malaysia Sabah berjaya menemukan satu spesies baharu kulat entomopatogenik atau dikenali sebagai 'kulat zombi', selain merekodkan lima spesies kulat yang belum pernah didokumentasikan di MalaysiaPenemuan itu merupakan hasil kajian Muhammad Shahbaz dari Institut Biologi Tropika dan Pemuliharaan yang meneroka kepelbagaian kulat di Borneo. ditemui daripada sampel labah-labah di hutan Sabah dan disahkan melalui analisis morfologi serta DNA.

"Spesies baharu itu ditemui daripada sampel yang diasingkan daripada seekor labah-labah di hutan Sabah dan disahkan melalui pemeriksaan morfologi serta analisis filogenetik berasaskan DNA. "Kulat berkenaan mempunyai ciri unik yang membezakannya daripada spesies lain dalam genus yang sama, sekali gus menyerlahkan kekayaan biodiversiti Sabah dan potensi penemuan organisma baharu yang masih belum diterokai di kawasan tropika,"Selain penemuan spesies baharu, kajian tersebut turut menilai potensi kulat entomopatogenik sebagai agen antikulat bagi mengawal penyakit tanaman, termasuk penggunaan nanoteknologi untuk meningkatkan keberkesanannyaKejayaan berkenaan turut mencerminkan komitmen berterusan IBTP dalam melahirkan generasi baharu saintis selain mengukuhkan kedudukan Sabah sebagai antara pusat penyelidikan biodiversiti terpenting di rantau ini.
