Redistricting has put several prominent New York Democrats into direct competition with one another—and opened younger progressive lawmakers to fierce challenges.
Jones is only running in the 10th district because he wanted to avoid a conflict with, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair who chose to run in the 17th after the redraw split his district. An establishment choice who boasts support from, Maloney is currently favored to win reelection.
This sort of tug-of-war between the progressive and moderate wings of the party is nothing new. But in NY-17, that battle is playing out against the backdrop of the Democrats’ broader effort to retain their majority on Capitol Hill — an in effort in which Maloney, the DCCC chair, is playing a key role.
