A unit by unit analysis of where the New York Giants roster currently stands as far as depth and potential.
Share to twitterNew York Giants' Cody Latimer , center, celebrates his touchdown with teammates during the first half of an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys, Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, in East Rutherford, N.J. This off-season, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman followed through on his promise to fix what ailed the team, namely the offensive line and the defense.
Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Mike Shula made it clear that Jones’ development is going to be put on a fast track to where if the situation is right, the world could get its first look at the future franchise quarterback in a regular season game as soon as this year. As for Manning, a recent video of him posted by the team’s website show he’s slimmed down. Shula himself praised the veteran for being in top physical condition and hinted that Manning’s comfort level in this, year two of the offense, has jumped up considerably.“And maybe even with him, it is kind of maybe the comfort level of being a year in a system and kind of knowing more of what we want. I think he’s throwing the ball well and moving around good.
“We will continue to work on the route running because we want to build him where he can pretty much line up anywhere and do some of the things wide receivers are doing,” o Shula said. “When you have the ability to move guys around like that, it is hard on the defense.” This year expect the coaching staff to be looking from even more contributions from the duo, both of whom dealt with injuries last year.
Then there is Engram, who is entering his third season. While Engram made strides last year—one of his biggest was cutting down on dropped balls—the time missed due to injury created an environment in which Engram just seemed to press a little more than he had to when he was in there. “I like Conrad. He’s tough. He’s smart. He can learn. He’s not a blazer, but he’s instinctive in the pass game,” Wells said. “It didn’t take a long time to figure out that this guy is very determined about being a really good player and I like that about him. He takes coaching very well. I really like that kid from what we saw over the three-day rookie minicamp.”In case it hasn’t sunk in yet, Odell Beckham Jr. is no longer a Giant nor is he coming back.
Shula is well aware of this potential pitfall. “ has learning to do. Sometimes the older guys have a little harder thing because sometimes they are so used to having this thing called this way for so many years, and now it is called exactly the opposite.” “Last year when he came in we were the fourth offense he’s been in, in maybe 3 months. Now it’s just our offense the whole time so he can grasp what we’re doing and have a solid contribution. He’s doing well this year. He’s doing much better than he did last year.”If there was a unit on this roster that desperately needed improvement, the offensive line was it.
Last year, left tackle Nate Solder had the double whammy of having to play hurt and play next to a rookie which saw him finished with theBut for all those who thought Solder’s play was poor, his total pressures allowed were nearly cut in half from the 60 he surrendered the season prior with the Patriots.
The big question mark with Remmers is his health. He underwent a minor procedure on his back in the offseason and had been working hard to strengthen his core. While there is optimism that his physical issues are behind him, it will still be interesting to see if he can make it through a 16-game season following that procedure.
Pulley, listed at 308 pounds, isn’t quite as “thick” as Halapio, who is listed at 317 pounds, but it would be a surprise if Pulley hasn’t been working on getting bigger and stronger in the weight room as he begins to defend his hold on the starting center position. Before the draft, Gettleman mentioned that the team was looking for a “lead dog” to step forward on the defensive line.
Dexter Lawrence, the New York Giants' No. 17 overall draft pick, works out during NFL football rookie camp, Friday, May 3, 2019, in East Rutherford, N.J. Therein lies one of the biggest questions for this team in the months ahead.
Besides establishing a rotation, it will be interesting to see what roles these players end up playing. There were some draft-day critics who, for example, opined that in Lawrence, the Giants ended up getting a replica of Tomlinson. They also re-signed Nate Stupar to provide depth, and they have Tae Davis, but Stupar and Davis were adequate at best last year when pressed into action.
Connelly, who was a walk-on at Wisconsin, has also impressed McGovern with his work ethic and determination. To recap, they traded away their best pass rusher, Olivier Vernon, whose productivity stunted thanks to a series of injuries that got in the way. “When the ball is down the field, he’s backside chasing that thing like a mad man. That intensity and that level of effort he plays with is going to lead to production with him.”
The biggest question is Ximines, not because of a lack of talent or desire, but because he’s taking the leap from a small school program to the NFL. It’s probably too soon to say what Ximines can realistically be expected to contribute this year, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he takes on a role similar to what Carter had last year as a rookie as a spot pass rusher. The Giants completely turned over their starting safety tandem from a year ago, going from Landon Collins and Curtis Riley as their strong and free safeties respectively to Jabrill Peppers, obtained in the Odell Beckham Jr.
