A New York appeals court on Thursday affirmed a lower court's ruling that found Yeshiva University, a private Orthodox Jewish college, was discriminating against students when it refused to recognize an LGBT club on campus.
The decision further prolongs the ongoing legal battle between the historic university and a club known as YU Pride Alliance, which was told it could not be considered an official club on campus, as it violated the college's"sincere religious beliefs" under the Torah's values.
In response to the high court dismissal and while awaiting a decision at the state appeals court level, YU temporarily suspended all student clubs on campus in September. YU later changed course in October and created a new club on campus known as Kol Yisrael Areivim as an alternative way to support LGBT students within the Torah framework.
YU is being represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which has defended the university's position that YU Pride Alliance's formation on campus was an"unprecedented intrusion" of the university's sincere religious beliefs.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER
