Ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate of any women's cancer, killing roughly one thousand women in Australia every year. But now, there's a new blood test that offers hope for detection, and improving outcomes for the women diagnosed with the disease.

She says at first she was unaware she had the disease.

Test results revealed cysts on her ovaries, and within weeks she was in surgery to have them removed.Amelia says the process was difficult. Around 18-hundred women are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, while around a thousand women will die from the disease.But Amelia is among the nine in 10 women who have surgery for ovarian cancer - and don't have the disease.Dr Andrew Stephens is from the Hudson Institute of Medical Research.

Dr Stephens says the hope is that the new testing will pick up the disease more effectively in its early stages, as well as avoiding unnecessary surgery.
