A redevelopment of the former Sydney convict jail and Indigenous meeting place in the heart of Sydney's harbour will seek to 'unearth the island's many layers of stories'.
A hotel, high-end restaurants and a public swimming pool would transform Sydney's Cockatoo Island, as part of a plan to attract more visitors to the world heritage place.The draft master plan is open for public feedback until DecemberA draft master plan for Sydney Harbour's largest island, also called Wareamah, has been released for public feedback.
According to the Harbour Trust, which manages the island, current visitor numbers are relatively low compared to other tourism and heritage sites across Australia. The campground would move to the western side of the island and the existing site would be turned into a park.More houses would be restored and used as boutique accommodation.
The proposal includes "enhanced" food and beverage offerings to support the "new and upgraded experiences". Light and sound projections would encourage visitors to extend their stays into the evening and overnight. "Our draft master plan will unearth the island's many layers of stories to allow visitors to learn about Australia's remarkable history," Ms Carding said.The draft master plan is open for feedback until December 13.Urban Development and Planning
