KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-minted Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun ordered Umno lawmaker Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim to apologise and retract the alleged sexist and racist remarks against Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto.

Azhar said he came to the decision after looking at the Dewan Rakyat hansard and found that the word"gelap" used by Baling MP Abdul Azeez was offensive. "As such, I want YB Baling to apologise and retract the word used," he said in a ruling Tuesday morning. Abdul Azeez, who said he would abide by the decision by the Speaker, however explained that he had no intention to call anyone"gelap" ."YB Speaker, I have been sitting in the same area where sits and that area is dark, quite often those sitting in that area do not get the attention of the Speaker because of that. "So it is important for the rakyat and netizens to know that I had no intentions to call anyone gelap because God has made me dark too.Azhar then advised lawmakers to be careful with their words and hoped that no derogatory words that are racist or sexist will be used in their debates. Kasthuri then interjected and thanked Azhar for his ruling but went on to explain that the incident on Monday should not have taken place. "I believe many MPs here feel that although Baling said it was not his intention, and that the sitting area here is indeed dark, I would like to know why he said 'pakai bedak' .Azhar then tried to resolve the matter by saying he has made a ruling that the words used by Abdul Azeez were indeed offensive. Kasthuri said Abdul Azeez is also a repeat offender, adding that many MPs, especially women, have become victims of his jibes and taunts.To this, Azhar said he will do so in the future, should Abdul Azeez cross the line.
