Ms Leeson said losing her mum was isolating and lonely, but now she's found a community of women who have been through significant loss and are finding ways to support one another.

Iris Leeson's mother died from cancer when she was 19 years oldThe organisation has teamed up with university researchers to better understand the impact of mother loss

"It's just lovely having that community to be able to … really relate with what's happening for you." She said the impact of mother loss was profound and lifelong, and hoped further research would help women experiencing it. Researcher Elesha Parigi said while there was little research into the impact of mother loss specifically, the effect of significant grief was well-documented.

She said she hoped the study would help the researchers and MDA better understand the impact of mother loss and how to best support women dealing with their grief. The researchers were initially hoping for 100 responses, which they received within two hours, and have now had over 2,000 women take part, with the survey open until the end of October.
