The redevelopment plans in Sydney's Waterloo Estate will now see nearly 500 extra social and affordable homes to address a 'huge backlog'.

But the Minns Labor government announced on Monday it would increase that to 50 per cent, taking the number of social and affordable homes from 1,074 to about 1,500. "This is also about making this community a better place to live for the existing residents, yes, but also hundreds of people on the social housing waitlist who desperately need a place to live," she said.
"We've had extremely positive feedback from the partners that are in the procurement pipeline with us," she said. Advocacy group Action for Public Housing condemned the revised plans, saying it would still force nearly 1,000 tenants in Waterloo South to relocate at a time when the city was experiencing a public housing shortage.Heffon MP Ron Hoenig, whose electorate covers the Waterloo Estate, said there while there had been efforts to improve the level of maintenance in the existing buildings in recent years, a complete overhaul was needed to lift living standards.
