Former head of community board concerned about a new shelter planned for Rosecrans Street
In the two weeks since county Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher announced a series of initiatives to address homelessness, two cities have expressed interest in applying for a share of $10 million in grants set aside for shelters.
The grants peaked the interest of some cities. A spokeswoman for Chula Vista said the city is interested in pursuing a grant for its shelter, and a spokeswoman for Vista said the idea could be discussed at an upcoming City Council meeting. Anyiwo said large encampments in the Midway District had become a growing concern to residents and business owners, and he saw the new shelter as a way of addressing the issue.
“I’m very disturbed about it,” she said. “It just brings more problem into Midway, and we’ve got more problems than we can handle right now. I don’t see how this is going to be a solution for Midway.” Dave Rolland, deputy director of communications for San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, said the request for proposals to operate the shelter was released by the San Diego Housing Commission even before Fletcher’s announcement, and applications are under review.
Vista City Council members have recently discussed funding a new shelter, and city communications officer Andrea McCullough said the offer may be discussed at the April 26 City Council meeting.
